Chris' story

"He doesn't let his disability stand in his way."

This South Boston High School student is more than just a spectator, though. At about 5 feet 7 inches tall, he plays power forward and center for his wheelchair basketball team. "I’m just about the tallest player," Chris said.

A few years ago Chris, who has spina bifida, also won five medals in swimming at the Special Olympics. Now he swims for fun at the South Boston Community Center.

"He believes he can do anything he wants if he puts his mind to it," said his mother, Denise O’Leary. "He doesn’t let his disability stand in his way."

He even comes out of surgery with a positive outlook, Denise said, adding, "He gives me strength."

Chris has been involved with Easter Seals since 1999, when he spent his first summer as an Easter Seals camper at Agassiz Village in Maine. This summer he has been working in there as a leader in training.

He also has helped out with events that raise money for Easter Seals and even though he was nervous he recently spoke to a group as part of the kickoff for the Easter Seals Annual Campaign.

Chris also gave something back to Easter Seals as an Ambassador in this year’s Easter Seals Walk With Me.

"Chris is very mature and self-possessed," said Easter Seals Camp Director Roz Fisher. "He’s an all-around terrific kid."
