Jarelin Escobar at Camp

“I wanted to help the campers have the best summer they could possibly have.”

Jarelin's newspaper article

After working four weeks as a camp counselor this summer, Jarelin Escobar stayed on an extra week to volunteer at Easter Seals Explorer Camp for kids with autism and other social challenges.

“I wanted to help the campers have the best summer they could possibly have,” she said.

Jarelin is an outgoing, expressive 17-year-old who has a disability and uses a wheelchair.  She wasn’t sure what working with campers with autism would be like but with support from experienced Easter Seals staff members, she learned a lot and blossomed into a real leader.

“Now I understand what autism is and I learned to have patience with the campers and understand where they’re coming from,” Jarelin said.  “By the end of the week, I got so much out of it.  It was a blast!”

In addition to working at camp, this former camper regularly speaks to Easter Seals supporters and takes part in Walk With Me, which raises funds for Easter Seals services.  She also has lobbied her state senator on disability awareness issues.

Easter Seals recently honored Jarelin’s work at camp and her support of Easter Seals by presenting her with its Emerging Leader Award.

A high school junior, Jarelin is looking forward to returning next year – with increased responsibilities.

“I’m grateful to Easter Seals for giving me this opportunity,” she said.
