Youth Leadership Program Offers New Opportunities

Youth Leadership

The Easter Seals Youth Leadership Program provides opportunities for young people with disabilities, ages 13 to 25, to develop their abilities and expand the possibilities they see for themselves.

Program participants take part in:

Service learning projects
Internships and other work experiences
Self-advocacy workshops
Youth leadership forums

Each activity fosters their feelings of importance and self-worth, while encouraging them to be positive forces for change in their communities.  In one recent project, for example, youth leaders filed a bill at the State House that designates October as Disability History Month.

All teenagers are worried about fitting in. Teens and young adults with disabilities face additional challenges, as they begin to decide who they are and how they want others to see them.  They also are worried about being treated differently because of their disabilities.

In the Youth Leadership Program, teens with disabilities work with Easter Seals staff members with disabilities who understand their needs and can address their concerns.

“The Easter Seals Youth Leadership program is geared specifically to young people with disabilities,” Easter Seals President Kirk Joslin said.  “It helps them develop the skills they will need to lead successful, independent lives and participate in their communities.”
